Chapter Eight

––––––––

MIRACLE ON 34th Street was one of Kami’s favorite movies, but she’d never cried during it before. Now she was sitting in a darkened theater trying to discreetly wipe away her tears before the lights came up. Her emotions had been so close to the surface lately that she couldn’t hold them back during the movie. Christmas really did feel like a time of miracles and she’d had a few of her own lately. Her sister and Ben were going to be fine. And Jonah was back in her life. She never would have imagined finding him again or finally admitting their feelings for each other, even if she’d sat on Santa’s lap and wished for it every year. She couldn’t explain how or why it had happened, but she was grateful it had.

In addition to trying to keep her emotions in check, she’d also had a hard time concentrating with Jonah right next to her. He was so familiar, yet at the same time, he was different. There were shadows in his eyes and sometimes his smile seemed forced. But their shared memories and foundation of friendship created an intimacy between them that had allowed them to pick up where they left off and move forward as if no time had passed. She’d never felt so connected to anyone else and though things were moving fast, it was right. She knew it. Even holding his hand gave her a sense of coming home.

When the credits finally ended, she stood, and Jonah reached out to help her put on her coat. “Do you mind if we slip over and take a picture of the decorations on the city tree? I promised Ben I would. This is the first year we’ve missed the tree lighting ceremony.”

Jonah looked surprised, but quickly nodded. “Sure. Is he big on Christmas decorations or something? I’m surprised a kid his age would care about that.”

“For the last couple of years the city has had children make a laminated snowflake with their Christmas wishes on it and they use them to decorate the tree. Ben is sure that’s how Santa remembers what he’s asked for. I got it to the decorating committee and he just wants proof that it was hung on the tree.” Kami wadded up her scarf and put it in her pocket. “Of course all he’s asked for is a Captain America doll.”

“Do boys call it a doll?” Jonah teased. “Action figure sounds more manly.”

She threw up her hands in mock exasperation. “Whatever it’s called, that’s what he wants.” She moved to the aisle behind his mother. “I haven’t had a chance to finish my Christmas shopping, so I really need to move that up on my to do list before they’re all sold out of Captain America stuff.”

“Maybe I could go shopping with you and pick something out for my parents.” He gave her a tentative smile and her heart melted a bit. He’d softened and let down his defenses since she’d first seen him.
